EQT
It drills natural gas under Pennsylvania and West Virginia and, unusually, owns the pipelines that carry it away, so it keeps the toll its rivals pay.
The scores
Growth3/4 ↑
Real, guided-up production growth (guidance raised twice in 2026), though TTM revenue growth is the lowest of its four-name filed cohort.
Business quality4/4 →
The only large-scale integrated producer, capturing midstream margin peers pay away, but behind-the-meter self-supply is a real substitute for its supply-agreement model.
Financial position3/4 ↑
Net debt fell 28% in two quarters with ample liquidity, but credit ratings sit at the lowest investment-grade rung on all three agencies.
Execution record4/4 ↑
Beat every guided metric in Q2 2026, raised guidance twice in 2026 alone, and set multiple company and basin drilling records.
Per share capture2/4 →
Three deals paid mostly in stock lifted the diluted count about half in two years; buybacks stopped after 2023, and cash went to debt.
Potential3/4 →
A real, diversified LNG and power-generation demand pipeline, but nearly half its quantified LNG volume remains pre-final-investment-decision.
Risk profile3/4 →
MVP's own history of construction delays, the lowest-rung investment-grade rating, and residual securities litigation are real but not existential risks.
Valuation2/4 →
Dearer than its filed peers' middle on every sales, earnings and cash-flow multiple; the own-history discount looks like a merger-perimeter artifact, not a bargain.
Evidence quality3/4 →
Central claims rest on primary filings and releases, cross-checked against independent EIA/AGA/Cleanview data, though no LNG counterparty is named in any of four agreements.
The Verdict
We rate EQT neutral. It drills natural gas in Pennsylvania and West Virginia and, unlike its large rivals, owns the pipelines that carry it away, which is where most of its profit comes from. The business is solid and well run, and its debt has fallen fast. But it costs more than most of its rivals while growing slowest, and the one reading that looks cheap compares it with a smaller company from before a merger. So it is full, not cheap. The view hinges on its conditional export and pipeline deals becoming firm while debt keeps falling. On 26 October it agreed to buy Range Resources for shares.
The long caseGas exports and power-hungry data centres want more American gas; EQT owns pipelines to those markets, and must turn its conditional deals into firm ones to profit.

The company
EQT pulls natural gas out of the Marcellus Shale, a rock layer under Pennsylvania and West Virginia that holds 93% of its proven reserves. Unusually, it also owns the 2,945 miles of pipeline that gather the gas from its wells and move it on, and a stake in the Mountain Valley Pipeline running south into Virginia.
A rival producer pays someone else for that step. EQT's buyers are gas wholesalers, exporters and power plants.
The evidence under this - 2 claims
How it makes money
It sells gas at whatever the market pays, and moves it through its own pipes. Selling gas is the big business but the thin one: in the June quarter it was 77.5% of revenue and made 6.6 cents of operating profit on each dollar. The pipelines were 22.5% of revenue and 73.9% of operating profit, because owning them turns a cost into a toll.
The evidence under this - 1 claim
Where the money comes from, stream by stream
| Stream | Share of sales (FY2025) | How it earns it |
|---|---|---|
| Natural gas sales | 81.2% | Selling its Appalachian gas to marketers, utilities and industrial buyers, in-basin and through its pipeline capacity to other regions. |
| NGLs and oil sales | 8.2% | Liquids such as ethane, propane and butane recovered from its gas, plus a little oil, sold after processing. |
| Pipeline and other | 7.2% | Fees other shippers pay to use its gathering and transmission pipelines, mostly fixed reservation fees. |
| Gains on derivatives | 3.4% | Hedge results on future gas sales; they swing with prices and were 27% of revenue in FY2023. |
Who runs it
Toby Rice has run EQT since 2019, and Jeremy Knop has run its finances since 2023. Insiders own under 1% between them, most of it Rice's, and he sold part of his stake this summer. Rice takes a token salary; his bonus rides on cash flow per share, keeping costs down and production, and his long-term shares on how the stock does against rivals. Nothing pays on returns on the money invested.
The evidence under this - 4 claims
Rice has since sold about 274,000 shares in open-market sales between June and August 2026 (C17), so his holding is smaller than the proxy shows.
The bonus excludes acquisitions above $100M and neutralises unplanned strategic curtailments, and the committee adjusted capital spending for the accelerated MVP Boost turbine purchase, so the cost measures are not read as reported.
The multiple tranches at slightly different prices on the same or nearby days is a pattern consistent with a pre-scheduled Rule 10b5-1 trading plan rather than a single discretionary decision, though the Form 4 data in the research pack does not itself confirm plan status; the roughly 274,000 shares sold is about 11% of Rice's post-sale holding, a real but not dominant fraction of his stake.
Why it wins, and who could beat it
Why customers come back
Owning the pipes means keeping the toll instead of paying it, so EQT gets gas to a buyer more cheaply than a producer that rents its route. It shows in the margins: of the four companies in its filed peer group, it keeps the most of each sales dollar after the cost of producing it, 68.4 cents against a middle of 47.9.

The threat
Gas from other American fields competes for the same export and power demand, and export demand dipped from about 18.4 to 17.8 billion cubic feet a day between the first and second quarters of 2026.
And data centres are building their own power on site. OpenAI and Anthropic alone have leased more than 10 gigawatts of it, bypassing the long gas-supply deals a producer like EQT signs with power plants.
The evidence under this - 2 claims
Much of the reported behind-the-meter build-out still runs on natural gas, so it competes with the long-term supply-agreement model EQT's CPV deal represents more than it displaces demand for gas itself - but a generator large enough to self-supply may not need EQT's transport and marketing relationship at all.
The rivals: EXE, RRC, AR, and 1 more that is private, in-house or listed abroad.
Who else does this, rival by rival

How big it could get
How big this could get
The growth is in exports and in power for data centres. America fed roughly 17 to 18 billion cubic feet a day into its export plants in 2026, up by double digits. EQT has also agreed to sell up to 1.2 billion cubic feet a day through Mountain Valley from 2027, once another company's pipeline is finished. Nobody publishes how much of the national growth EQT will win.

Who has signed
A new 2-gigawatt power plant in West Virginia has signed for 325,000 dekatherms of gas a day for 10 years. EQT also holds 20-year deals for 4.5 million tonnes a year of liquefied gas, but 1.0 million of those tonnes, and a 2.0 million tonne processing deal, wait on export plants not yet approved.

The results
The numbers
Sales grew 19% over the twelve months to Sep 2026, slower than the 64% in the year to Dec 2025.
Operating margin is 42%, up from 33% in the year to Dec 2023.
Running costs take 42¢ of each sales dollar, down from 81¢ in the year to Dec 2021.
Each dollar put into the business earns 9.8% a year after tax, about where it was (13%) in the year to Dec 2022.
It turned 41% of sales into free cash, $3.80B over the last twelve months, after spending 27% of sales on buildings and equipment.
It owes $5.47B more than the cash it holds, about 0.9 years of the cash its operations bring in.
The share count rose 95% in 4.8 years, and pay in shares costs 0.9% of sales.

What growth costs
For a gas producer, sales move mostly with the gas price, so costs per dollar of sales rise and fall with the price rather than with growth. The better measure is cost per unit of gas produced, and that has held at the low end of what the company guided.
The evidence under this - 3 claims
Revenue in these years moved with gas prices and hedge results (C26), so a falling cost share can mean a higher price rather than cheaper growth; Q2 2026 per-unit operating costs of $1.03 per Mcfe (C11) are the volume-based measure.

The last report (21 Jul)
Quarter ended June 2026, filed figures.
Sales move with the gas price, which EQT does not set. What it does control all beat guidance in the June quarter of 2026: it sold more gas than the top of its range, spent 9% below the bottom of its capital budget and ran at the low end of its costs. It then raised its volume forecast for the year.
Adjusted earnings of $0.39 a share sat only $0.05 above the reported figure, and the debt kept falling, to $5.5B of net debt from $7.7B at the end of 2025.
What it did to the thesisIt supported the parts of the case EQT controls: it beat on volume, spending and costs, kept cutting debt, and its earnings are clean. It did not settle what the higher price needs, which is pipeline contracts turning firm, so the view stays Neutral.
The quarter in detail
Sales growth from the previous quarter, filed figures.
Earnings per share $0.39 against $0.41 expected; $0.34 as filed, the gap being what the company adds back.

The price, and where we disagree
In short. Full. EQT costs more than most of its rivals while growing slowest. That extra is worth paying only if its pipeline contracts that still carry conditions become firm and its debt keeps falling.
The September-quarter results and the 10-Q a day later did not answer the main test. Net debt held at about $5.5B and Southgate's start is still dated mid-2028, with no sign of a faster finish. EQT has also agreed to buy Range Resources for stock, leaving Range holders about 27% of the combined company.
The deal does not answer the Southgate, export-deal or debt questions, which wait for the results. It adds a vote, an antitrust review and a promise of $325M a year in savings that nothing yet supports.

The pack no longer reports a cross inside its window; the 50-day average is still below the 200-day. Consensus unchanged.
- 2026-09-26editedRe-struck on the refreshed pack's news window: 12 items measured, all flat, and the drawdown is now 25.5%. The claim that the fall tracks the sector now rests on the pack's measured co-movement with the other gas producers rather than on assertion, and the old 'largest item' detail is dropped.
The 10-K's own risk factors note that MVP Mainline itself was repeatedly delayed by construction and regulatory setbacks over roughly a decade, and that those same risks 'may be realized in the future' for Southgate and Boost - so a mid-2028-to-year-end-2026 acceleration, while a real regulatory milestone, is not yet a completed project.

These are the two companies' own projections in an announcement; no filing yet shows the analysis behind the savings or the free-cash-flow figure, and the registration statement will carry the financial advice each board relied on.
- Net debt is computed here from the filed principal and cash, not taken from the company's own reconciliation, which the 10-Q does not carry.
- Sales and operating income fell year on year on lower prices and volumes.
How we read the multiple
Counting debt, the whole company costs 6.2 times a year's cash profit, between its two rivals that can be priced this way: dearer than Expand Energy, cheaper than Range. On sales, earnings and spare cash it is dearer than the rivals' middle, yet it grew slowest of the four.
It looks cheap against its own normal of 9.2, but that past was a smaller company: revenue was $5.27B in 2024, before the merger was in for a full year, against $8.64B last year.
Against its own history. Cheap on some measures and dear on others, against a past that was a smaller company, so the gap proves little either way.

Rivals' figures come from a data provider, so read the spread of the group rather than any single pair.
Mid-group on this measure, and dearer than the middle for each dollar of sales, profit or cash. The extra it costs is its own: buyers pay for the pipelines.
Where we disagree with the market
A low-cost Appalachian gas producer riding the same export story as its rivals, and cheap against its own history.
The pipeline advantage and the debt reduction are real, but the cheapness compares it with a smaller company from before the merger.
Coverage compares EQT's price with its own past years without flagging that those years straddle a merger that transformed its revenue.
We would be wrong if the conditional export and pipeline deals become firm and the gap to its rivals closes as its record after the merger lengthens.

What could go wrong, and how we would know
The risks
- Contracts that may not firm up. Some export deals and 1.2 billion cubic feet a day of pipeline sales wait on projects that have not been approved or built.
- Pipelines that run late. Southgate is promised for the end of 2026 and a Mountain Valley expansion for mid-2028, and Mountain Valley itself was built late.
- One notch above junk. All three rating agencies grade its bonds at the lowest investment-grade rung.
- A big purchase, paid in shares. Range holders would own 27% of the company; a failed vote or antitrust block would cost EQT a $1,148M break fee.

- 2026-10-23editedEQT's own notice of 7 October puts the third-quarter results on 27 October; the 20 October refresh date came from a vendor estimate
- 2026-10-28editedthe 10-Q the day after the print restates mid-2028 in service and does not repeat the acceleration; the year-end 2026 finish rests on the second-quarter statement alone
EQT's own risk factors state that low natural gas prices, an increase in indebtedness, or other factors could result in a downgrade; being at the lowest investment-grade rung on all three agencies simultaneously (rather than comfortably inside investment grade, as with this repo's CEG thesis at BBB+/Baa1) means less cushion before a downgrade to non-investment grade, even as net debt is falling.
These are the two companies' own projections in an announcement; no filing yet shows the analysis behind the savings or the free-cash-flow figure, and the registration statement will carry the financial advice each board relied on.
What we still do not know
- How much of America's export and power growth EQT will win. Nobody publishes the split.
- Whether its cheapness against its own past is real. More years after the merger will tell.
- Who buys most of its liquefied gas. None of its four filed export agreements names a buyer.
The evidence under this - 3 claims
1.0 MTPA of the 4.5 MTPA offtake total and all 2.0 MTPA of the tolling commitment are explicitly pre-final-investment-decision, meaning roughly 43% of the aggregate 7.0 MTPA LNG-linked volume disclosed is conditional on projects that may not proceed, and none of the four counterparties is named, which limits independent verification of counterparty credit quality or deal terms.

What would change our view
- Neutral→AttractiveThe contracted growth is committed and the debt keeps falling
It needs all of:
- ○The conditional export and pipeline sales deals become firm, and the Southgate extension and Mountain Valley expansion stay on their faster schedules.watched as it happens
- ○Net debt keeps falling from about $5.5B instead of stalling or rising.checked at the next results, due by 16 Feb
- Neutral→UnattractiveThe premium is not earned
It needs any of:
- ○Those conditional deals fall through, or Southgate or the Mountain Valley expansion slips well past its promised date.watched as it happens
- ○A rating agency cuts EQT's bonds below investment grade.watched as it happens
We would also be wrong if
- The discount to EQT's own past survives once that past covers only the company after its 2024 pipeline merger.
What is coming
- December 2026 MVP Southgate placed into service: Whether the build finishes by year-end 2026 as second-quarter statements said or by mid-2028 as the 10-Q restates; no notice of completion has been given.

- December 2026 MVP Southgate placed into service: Whether the build finishes by year-end 2026 as second-quarter statements said or by mid-2028 as the 10-Q restates; no notice of completion has been given.
- 31 December 2026 Share repurchase program expires: Whether the board renews the $1.4B left, and whether falling debt turns into buybacks that start to offset the shares issued for deals.
- 31 January 2027 Range registration statement (S-4) filed: How the exchange ratio was set, the basis for the $325M of savings, and the credit metrics the combined company would carry.
- February 2027 Q4 2026 results and FY2026 10-K: Year-end reserves, net debt, 2027 guidance, and whether any conditional LNG or firm-sales tranche has reached a final decision.
Since we wrote this
- 28 OctEarningsQuarterly filing: debt flat, Southgate still dated 2028The 10-Q puts net debt near $5.5B, little changed, and gives Southgate's start as mid-2028. Neither test is answered, so Neutral holds.

- 26 OctNewsEQT agrees to buy Range Resources in an all-stock dealRange holders would own about 27% of the combined company. It needs both votes and antitrust clearance; it does not answer our Southgate, export or debt tests, so Neutral holds.
- 23 OctNewsEQT's Q3 results moved to 27 October; dividend up 3%EQT's own notice sets results for 27 October. The dividend rise and a new short-term borrowing line move no part of the argument.
