Aehr Test Systems
A small California maker of machines that heat and power chips for hours so the weak ones fail in the factory, now selling mostly to AI chip makers.
The scores
Growth1/4 ↑
Revenue fell two straight years, to $50.0M from $66.2M; the AI orders are real but not yet revenue.
Business quality3/4 ↑
The only supplier shown doing wafer-level AI burn-in, but on one unnamed customer, with rivals in silicon carbide and package level.
Financial position3/4 ↑
Net cash of $116.5M and no debt, but raised from share sales rather than operations, which burned cash last year.
Execution record2/4 ↑
The fiscal 2024 guide fell from $100M to $66M in two cuts; fiscal 2026's was met, one clean year since.
Per share capture3/4 →
Shares up about 17% in four years with flat revenue, but the recent sales were made at high prices and nothing ranks ahead.
Potential2/4 ↑
A large AI market, but growth past fiscal 2027 needs customers who have not ordered, and the burn-in slice is unmeasured.
Risk profile2/4 →
Three customers were half of revenue, and the guide rests on two unnamed buyers' cancellable orders.
Valuation2/4 ↑
Pays 12 times a guide not yet shipped, and still needs growth after it that analysts do not model.
Evidence quality3/4 →
Revenue, cash and insider sales are filed; customers, the AI share and every order since May are management's own.

The Verdict
We rate Aehr Test Systems Unattractive. The business is mixed: it is the one company shown screening AI chips while still on the wafer, but its sales fell two years in a row and rest on a few unnamed buyers. The price is full: at about 12 times next year's forecast sales, it still counts on years of growth after that which nobody has ordered, so a miss would hurt. As a bet it is Fragile: even if a second AI chip maker signs up, the company would be worth only a little more than it costs today, and if the AI orders stop, shareholders keep little beyond the cash.
The long caseIf AI chips keep packing more dies and memory into one package, screening each die before packaging pays, and Aehr is the one shown doing it.

The customer is unnamed, and EDGAR full-text search finds no filing by onsemi, Intel, TSMC or NVIDIA naming Aehr (S01).
Bookings and effective backlog are the company's own measures; the filed backlog at the year end was $80.6M and cancellable (C07).
The vendor put company value at $3.26B on an older share count, 63.9 times trailing sales at the October 5 close (S11); on that basis the October 22 close gives about 34.

The company
Some chips are weak from birth and fail in their first weeks of use. Burn-in finds them by running chips hot and under power for hours in the factory.
Aehr's main machine does this to whole wafers, the discs chips are cut from, nine at once, through a contact plate built for each chip design. A second line, bought in 2024, handles finished chips.
Its biggest AI customer used to test chips after packaging and now does all its burn-in on the wafer instead.

The customer is unnamed, and EDGAR full-text search finds no filing by onsemi, Intel, TSMC or NVIDIA naming Aehr (S01).
How it makes money
Aehr earns most of its money selling the machines: $28.7M of last year's $50.0M. The contact plates made for each chip design brought in $14.9M, and are bought again whenever a customer changes its chip, so management treats them as repeat business. Service brought the rest.
The money comes from very few hands: five customers paid 70% of last year's sales, and none is named.
The evidence under this - 3 claims
Contactors were $14.9M of $50.0M, 30%, in fiscal 2026 (C03), which agrees; the 40% is not in the 10-K.

| Systems | 57.4% | FOX-XP, FOX-NP and Sonoma burn-in systems, booked on shipment or acceptance. |

| Services | 12.8% | Installation, support and spare parts on installed systems. |
Who runs it
Gayn Erickson has run Aehr since 2012, through the car-chip boom and the turn to AI. The founder, Rhea Posedel, is still chairman.
Insiders own about 4.6%. Bonuses paid nothing last year, and long-term share awards pay on reaching a sales target by June 2027. Insiders sold 743,893 shares in the past year, none under a pre-set selling plan, and bought none.

Why it wins, and who could beat it
Why customers come back
An AI chip is now packaged with several other chips and stacks of memory, so one weak chip can spoil an expensive package. Intel has said many defects still get past the wafer stage. Aehr says catching them earlier pays many times over, though that figure is its own.
Its edge is know-how in powering a whole wafer at once, kept mostly secret. Nobody else is shown doing it for AI chips; for car chips, a Chinese rival sells a similar machine and won the first patent ruling.
The evidence under this - 5 claims
No buyer has published what a failed AI package costs it; Intel says defects still escape wafer test to package test but puts no figure on it (S22).
The threat
The main alternative is to test after packaging, as Teradyne's and Advantest's machines do; Aehr's lead AI customer stopped doing that. For finished AI chips, rivals such as AEM in Singapore already sell burn-in machines, and AEM says a large AI chip designer chose it. For car chips, three Asian makers sell wafer machines like Aehr's.

How big it could get
How big this could get
Chip-testing machines of all kinds sell for about $15.3B a year, on the industry group SEMI's forecast for 2026, rising to $20.8B by 2028. Aehr sold $50.0M last year.
Nobody outside the company measures how much of that is burn-in, so the true size of Aehr's market is unknown. What is measured is the driver: TSMC, which makes most AI chips, expects its AI chip sales to grow by well over half a year until 2029.
The evidence under this - 3 claims
SEMI's 2025 figure moved from $11.2B to about $11.7B in seven months, and it counts all test equipment, not burn-in (S18, S19).
TSMC is a supplier with a stake in the AI story; the growth rate is its forecast, not its customers' orders.
SEMI does not split out burn-in, so no outside measure confirms it (S19).
Who has signed
Since May the lead AI customer ordered $22M of wafer machines, a large internet company $41M of the finished-chip machines, and a light-chip customer two more systems. Car-chip customers added more than $8M.
None of these buyers is named, and the company says most orders can be cancelled with small penalties.

What growth costs
Aehr has been spending ahead of its sales. Research, selling and office costs took 31 cents of each sales dollar in fiscal 2022 and 64 cents last year, on the same sales. The profit forecast needs sales to rise much faster than those costs.
The evidence under this - 2 claims
The company guided fiscal 2024 to at least $100M in July 2023 and delivered $66.2M (C14).
The last report (14 Jul)
Quarter ended May 2026, filed figures.
In the quarter to May 2026, Aehr's sales rose 34% to $18.8M and it made $1.4M, its only profitable quarter of a year that lost $7.1M.
The bigger news was orders: a record $60.7M in the quarter, bringing orders waiting to ship to $100.6M. On that, Aehr forecast sales of $130M to $150M for the year to June 2027, up 160% to 200%, with a profit before tax of about a fifth of sales.
What it did to the thesisIt turned the AI story from promises into orders, enough to cover most of the coming year. It left open the question the price turns on: whether new AI customers follow after this year, and whether the profit margin returns.

What management did with the money
Aehr sold new shares as its price rose, raising $97.4M in the year to May 2026, most of it at about $74 a share in April. It has no debt, and that cash now funds the growth.

The price, and where we disagree
In short. Full. It pays for this year's forecast and still for years of fast growth after it, from customers who have not yet ordered.
The shares rose sharply over the past year, all of it from investors paying more for each dollar of sales. They hit $145.61 in August, fell almost by half in two weeks with no news, as insiders had just sold, and fell by almost half again between 5 and 22 October, to $55.65, with no company news.
The next test comes soon: the first quarter of the new year ended in late September, and its results are due in early November.

How we read the multiple
Aehr is valued at about $1.70B, net of its cash, against $50.0M of sales last year and a forecast of $130M to $150M this year.
For the price to work:
- At the forecast's middle, $140M, the price is about 12 times sales.
- The forecast profit before tax, about a fifth of sales, would be about $28M.
- That puts the price at about 60 times that profit.
- Analysts expect sales to stay flat the year after, so the gap has to close by growth nobody models yet.
Against its own history. It sits far above its own normal, and the whole rise came from buyers paying more per dollar of sales, while sales per share fell.
The evidence under this - 4 claims
The vendor put company value at $3.26B on an older share count, 63.9 times trailing sales at the October 5 close (S11); on that basis the October 22 close gives about 34.

Priced against its rivals
Only Trio-Tech International sells the same thing to the same buyers as a large part of what it does. A price comparison needs at least two, so the price is judged against its own history instead.
Also checked and set aside: Cohu (a substitute, not the same product).
Private or foreign rivals that cannot be priced: Suzhou Semight Instruments, Nexustest Instruments, Micro Control Company, KES Systems, Advantest, Pentamaster, AEM Holdings, Chroma ATE, ESPEC.
The bet: what it pays if it works
This is a bet that wafer burn-in becomes standard for AI chips, with a second large chip maker in production. Even then, valued at a rich but not extreme price for each dollar of sales, the company would be worth a little over half of the 5 October price this bet was struck at.
If the AI orders stop once the current orders ship, what is left is the cash and a small car-chip and light-chip business, a small fraction of today's value.

Where we disagree with the market
Aehr is the AI burn-in winner: orders up sevenfold, a forecast near triple last year, and the only wafer machine shown working on AI chips.
This year looks ordered. What the price adds on top rests on customers who have not ordered, from a company whose last one-customer forecast failed.
In 2023 Aehr forecast at least $100M of sales on one car-chip customer, cut that twice and delivered $66.2M; the shares fell from $54.10 to $9.83. Today's orders are cancellable, the buyers unnamed, and insiders sold into both rallies.
Against us: the orders are real, and a second large AI chip maker is testing Aehr's machine on its production line. If it orders, much of our view falls away.

What could go wrong, and how we would know
The risks
- A few buyers Three customers were half of last year's sales and the forecast rests on two unnamed buyers whose orders can be cancelled.
- Rivals for finished chips AEM and others already sell burn-in for finished AI chips, and one large designer chose AEM.
- Margins under pressure Gross margin fell to 35.3% last year, and suppliers of power parts raised prices 40%, management says.
- Chinese copies A Chinese rival sells a similar wafer machine and won the first court round; the appeal is pending.
- Orders can slip In fiscal 2024 one customer's slower orders cut the forecast by a third within nine months.

Contactors were $14.9M of $50.0M, 30%, in fiscal 2026 (C03), which agrees; the 40% is not in the 10-K.
What we still do not know
- Who the lead AI customer is, and how much more it plans to buy after the $22M order.
- How big the burn-in market is: nobody outside the company measures it.
- Whether the second AI chip maker in trials will order for production, and when.
- Whether any memory maker will commit; management needs one before it builds the product.

The customer is unnamed and has not ordered; the last guide built on one customer's forecast was cut by a third (C14).
No memory maker is named, and management says it will not build the product until one commits.
